help_outline What is the Barbell Hip Thrust (Glute Drive Station)?

The Barbell Hip Thrust (Glute Drive Station) is a compound (multi-joint) exercise designed to build the Gluteus Maximus (Upper & Lower Fibers). The scientifically proven #1 exercise for glute hypertrophy. Delivers peak mechanical tension in the shortened glute position where horizontal hip extension force is highest.

fitness_center What muscles does it work?

Primary Target: Gluteus Maximus (Upper & Lower Fibers).
Secondary Synergists: Hamstrings, Quadriceps, Adductors.

handyman What equipment is required?

Required Equipment: Olympic Barbell, Foam Barbell Pad, Dedicated Hip Thrust Bench or Flat Bench.

check_circle Is it suitable for beginners?

Rated Intermediate. Beginners can safely perform this by starting with 3 sets of 10-12 reps (RPE 7), maintaining a controlled 3-second descent, and focusing on form before increasing weight.

list_alt STEP-BY-STEP BIOMECHANICAL EXECUTION

01

Bench & Bar Setup

Sit on floor with upper back against bench (just below shoulder blades). Roll padded barbell directly over hips.

VECTOR CUE: Upper back against bench pad • Bar centered over hips • Thick foam pad in place
02

Foot Placement & 90° Shin Angle

Place feet shoulder-width, flat on floor. When hips are elevated, shins must be strictly vertical (90° knee angle).

VECTOR CUE: Shins vertical at top • Feet shoulder-width • Knees pushed slightly outward
03

Hip Extension Drive & Posterior Pelvic Tilt

Drive through heels to thrust hips upward until torso and thighs form a straight horizontal table. Squeeze glutes aggressively with posterior pelvic tilt.

VECTOR CUE: Drive heels into floor • Tuck chin (don't look back) • Posterior pelvic tilt at apex
04

1-Second Lockout & Controlled Drop

Hold peak contraction for 1 second, then lower hips under control back to hovering above floor.

VECTOR CUE: 1-second peak squeeze • Keep ribs down • 2-second eccentric return

checklist FORM TECHNIQUE PARAMETERS

Movement Classification: Compound (Multi-Joint)
Primary Agonist: Gluteus Maximus (Upper & Lower Fibers)
Synergists: Hamstrings, Quadriceps, Adductors
Recommended Tempo: 2-1-1-1
Rest Period: 120 Seconds

warning COMMON MISTAKES & PRECISION FIXES

MISTAKE: Hyperextending the lumbar spine and tilting head backward instead of tucking chin and using glutes
FIX: Keep chin tucked forward toward chest and lock out through a posterior pelvic glute squeeze.
